Being a winning sports bettor is hard. It is more difficult than most people imagine.

Sports bettors and those who cater to them will often dismiss this fact, either through ignorance or malfeasance (how often have you seen sports touts declaring absurd winning percentages?)

In order to win, you need to have a winning percentage of better than 52.38 percent*. Since picking at random would get you to 50 percent, on average, this seems like an insignificant deficit to make up.

It is not. Edges can be hard to come by, and when you find one, they often involve small — tiny even — amounts. Any of these can get you closer to where you need to be. But beating the book is awfully tough.

Few people succeed.

This is why I advise people not to bet on sports. Or, if they do, to bet less money. And to bet less often. I have recently given up on this advice.

The explosion of legal sports betting across the United States, as well as the numerous outlets offering sports wagering online, is a clear indicator that fans want to bet on sports and have the ability to do so legally like never before.

So, I have decided to impart whatever wisdom I have here to help people make smarter decisions about sports betting. Even if it only means you are still a losing player but lose less money, that still has value.

Also, some not-bettors may find this info interesting, particularly stat-heads like myself.

The goal here is to help bettors make better decisions, leading to more money in your pocket, and less in the casino coffers.

Hopefully you will find it all entertaining and informative.

So why the name Lazy Man Sports? Most professional sports bettors either work as a team (or spend ridiculous hours finding winners). The average person does not have access to a large team of knowledgeable bettors or the time needed to properly handicap games.

I have found many ways to improve your results, often with minimal effort. Thus, even a lazy man can do it.

And by “man” I mean “mankind,” inclusive of any gender.
